I asked my husband to take photos of us throughout our day…
So this is a day in the life of Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood Homeschool
Our children are: Levi (age 4); David (age 7); Stephen (age 10)
I’ve included the real-life actual times of the photos, give or take a minute or two.
7:30 AM: Wake up. {Sometimes this is 8AM… or even later. We’re not early risers.}
Levi decides to color some of his Greek alphabet before breakfast.
8:30 AM: At breakfast, we read about the food chain from Creation Science for Kids.
9:00 AM: Start Bible Study (Grapevine Old Testament Overview)
9:05 AM: Levi stops to stare out the window.
9:15 AM: David & Stephen start notebook time. Levi has wandered into the toy room (I think).
David finished notebook time at 9:30AM. This is as far as David ended up today with his science illustration page:
{I’ll take what I can get, especially on the first day that Daddy has returned from Brazil.} Stephen, the family’s geography fanatic, continues to work on a grid map until 9:50 AM.
10:15 AM: Start math assignment
10:50 AM: Stephen works on flashcards while David works on an addition math game. {no photo of math game today, but below is one we took of the same game on a different day.}
11AM – 12PM: Lunch break
12:15 PM: Stephen reads from his current daily read-aloud book, Minstrel in the Tower. {Today we decided to read until we finished the book.}
While Stephen is reading, David works on a 3D diorama he wants to use for his presentation on knights next week. This is an activity in the free Castle Diary Unit Study at Homeschoolshare.
1:00 PM: David and I read The Making of a Knight together while Stephen listens. {Gary and Levi are out running errands now.}
I give Stephen some independent reading time to read his current selection, Little House in the Big Woods. {He’s been plowing through a bunch of books that are unrelated to our memory work.} David takes a break.
2:00 PM: I read the Hey Andrew! Reader to the boys. Stephen and David work on one page of Hey Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! We review Greek alphabet (to date) using flashcards. We work on one page of Latin’s Not So Tough.
2:30 PM: David works on his spelling lesson (All About Spelling) while Stephen works on an IEW key-word-outline for one paragraph and writes a rough draft for another paragraph.
After IEW, Stephen recites the adverb chart orally (we are reviewing all charts and definitions randomly right now, since this is our third year in Essentials). Then he completes his All About Spelling lesson and is done by 3:45 PM.
Then it’s time for the great outdoors (actually, I think they had already gone outside a couple of times by this point)…
I didn’t mention a specific memory work time because we review our memory work using our notebook activities and by singing our songs at lunch or when we’re reading SOTW, or at some other random points throughout the day. We also have mega-review days (according to subject), especially since I am working with Stephen on being a Memory Master x All Three Cycles this year. And piano practice takes place either during one of their breaks or after our school day.
Most nights, we read Story of the World and a Bible devotion before we turn off the light. In fact, nighttime was when we did all of our read-alouds last year, which turned out to be a great way for us to train ourselves to read together more as a family.
Although we read from the literature selections as noted in our reading plan, we don’t stick strictly to the order or schedule on our daily checklists. Sometimes there’s a 30-minute delay because someone cannot find his IEW notebook. Other times we decide to work on a Homeschool in the Woods project in the afternoon (or evening or weekend). And over the course of our day, Levi is usually playing, coloring, or working in his notebook. [Read more about Levi and his preschool ways.]
