It’s that time again! Yep, it’s time for our third annual Great Big Ole Book Giveaway! Woohoo!
As our family reorganized our bookshelves this summer, we decided to release a few of our books to bless another family who may wish to add some Ancient-and-World-Empires-History related reading to their home library (along with some books related to prepositions and biology/earth science). These books are from our personal library and are in “good” to “like new” condition. Included in this giveaway are the following:
Devotions
Whisper of God Devotional. Cain. A 52-week devotional to take you through the year and encourage you to see God in the ordinary.
Whisper of God Devotional for Kids. Cain. Paired with The Whisper of God (for adults), this 52-week devotional for boys and girls (grades 3+) encourages families to see God in the ordinary and seek Him through scripture.
Read Alouds
What Really Happened in Ancient Times. Johnson. This collection of historical biographies take you through the lives of ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things in ancient times. Features Eve, Noah, Gilgamesh, Imhotep, Daniel, Cyrus the Great, Eratosthenes, and Constantine.
Casting the Gods Adrift. McCaughrean. A dramatic story of an Egyptian boy who works for King Tut’s father, Pharaoh Akhenaten. The boy struggles with following his father’s traditional polytheistic faith as opposed to the pharaoh’s new monotheistic faith. This quick read (90 pages) includes references to Egyptian mythology.
Little Pear. Lattimore. Living in a small village in China in the 1900s, Little Pear seems to get into trouble without even trying. This illustrated chapter book is good for reading aloud to younger children or may be used as an early chapter book for emerging independent readers.
The Cat Who Went to Heaven. Coatsworth. According to legend, cats were denied Buddha’s blessing because they did not accept his teachings. When a struggling artist in ancient Japan grows to love a cat given to him by his housekeeper, he includes the cat in his painting. After the priest rejects his work, the artist believes his life is ruined until he is rewarded for his love by a Buddhist miracle.
Om-Kas-Toe: Blackfeet Twin Captures an Elkdog. Thomasma. Set in a time when the Blackfeet tribe roamed the northern plains in search of buffalo, this book follows the adventures of young Om-Kas-Toe and his twin sister, who discover a strange animal the tribe has never seen before: the “elkdog” (aka, horse).
O Canada! Her Story. Akins. A collection of eight historical narratives and biographies about the places, events, and people who dwelt in the land of Canada from before the arrival of the Europeans through modern times. Covers famous Canadians such as Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, along with Sir Frederick Grant Banting, who discovered insulin, and the heart-wrenching account of the Dionne Quituplets.
Picture Books
Behind the Mask: A Book about Prepositions. Heller. Brilliantly illustrated, Heller explores the world of prepositions through rhyme. This book provides several examples of prepositions and some of the rules of usage.
The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb. Burgan. Especially for children who enjoy comic-style graphics, this engaging book provides a look into the historical events surrounding the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and the supposed curse associated with it.
Tut’s Mummy: Lost… and Found. Donnelly. Beginning with the death of King Tut, this Level 4 reader provides an engaging story of archaeologist Howard Carter’s discovery of this famous tomb.
Where Butterflies Grow. Ryder. Beautifully illustrated, this book follows the life of a small caterpillar as it hatches, grows, and transforms into a Black Swallowtail butterfly. Includes an endnote on how children can grow their own butterfly gardens to attract butterflies.
My First Book about Insects (Sesame Street). Einhorn. Full of colorful photos, diagrams, and drawings, this little picture book provides a great overview of the most well-known invertebrate, the insect.
Bats (Scholastic Science Readers). Wood. A Level 1 reader providing an overview of the only flying mammal, the bat. Learn where bats live, what they eat, how they find prey (through echolocation), how they help people, and how people can help them.
The Runaway Kite: An Adventure in Japan. Part of Disney’s Small World Library, these books are a delightful way to explore world geography and cultures. Although these are Out of Print (OOP.), you can find many of these used on eBay, on Amazon through 3rd party sellers, or on Thriftbooks. Masai and I. Kroll. In school, a young girl learns about East Africa and the Masai people. As she considers her current way of life, she begins to wonder what her life would be like if she were Masai.
The Storm Book. Zolotow. A Caldecot Honor book written with vivid descriptions, this story follows a boy’s curiosity during a summer thunderstorm, its effects on surrounding area, and his mother’s calming explanation of what is happening.
Arrow to the Sun: A Pueblo Indian Tale. McDermott. Brilliantly illustrated in a manner reminiscent of Pueblo Indian art, this Caldecott Award-winning storybook retells an ancient legend of a boy searching for his father, passing through the the kiva of lions, the kiva of snakes, the kiva of bees, and the kiva of lightning.
Viva Mexico! A Story of Benito Juarez and Cinco de Mayo. A biography of the Zapotec Indian Benito Juarez who became the President of Mexico and lead his country in a war for independence. Historical endnote provides additional information about Cinco de Mayo.
Legends and Leagues, or Mr. Tardy Goes from Here to There. Bustard. One day, Mr. Tardy seeks the help of Mr. Longitude and Mr. Latitude, who specialize in “getting from here to there.” As the two professionals teach Mr. Tardy about maps, students are introduced to map concepts such as the compass rose. (Note: Without the supplemental workbook, the parent will likely need to point out specific concepts and explain some of the dialogue by using a map to get the most benefit from this storybook.)
Video
Paul: Apostle of Christ. An dramatization/interpretation of the apostle Paul’s last days in prison before his execution, along with Luke’s interaction with him as he writes the details of the beginnings of the early church. Not appropriate for young children, for it shows the intense persecution of Christians under the cruel hand of Nero. (Be sure to read a review before watching with your family.)
