As our family reorganized our bookshelves this summer, we decided to release a few of our books to bless another family who may wish to add some Medieval-to-Modern world history related reading to their home library. Trial and Triumph: Stories from Church History. A collection of forty-six brief biographies of figures from the family of the Christian faith, including Augustine, Charlemagne, Luther, Bunyan, and C.S. Lewis.
Son of Charlemagne. Set in the late 700’s, this work of historical fiction takes you through a time when King Charles of the Franks is crossing the Alps with his family to meet with the Pope.
The Green Ember (autographed copy). An adventuresome tale of rabbit siblings who live ordinary lives until tragedy strikes. “Kings fall and kingdoms totter. Tyrants ascend and terrors threaten. Betrayal beckons, and loyalty is a broken road with peril around every bend.” A favorite book of our children by fellow CC dad, S.D. Smith.
Treasure Island. An enduring classic of piracy, mystery, and seafaring adventure set in the eighteenth century.
Inside Out and Back Again. Written as a series of journal entries in verse, this book chronicles a young girl’s experience of fleeing Vietnam after the war and her trials of assimilating into American culture.
There’s No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System. A great illustrated picture book for beginning readers that features the 8 planets of our solar system.
I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! When his mother catches him painting the walls and ceiling of their home, she puts up the paints and claims that he “ain’t a-gonna paint no more.” The mischievous boy finds the paints and continues his artistic pursuits as he paints himself.
Around the World in a Hundred Years. Follow the lives of 15th-century European explorers through these ten amusing tales from Henry the Navigator to Magellan.
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Sadako is based on a true story of a girl who suffers from leukemia as a result of the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. Beginning with her success at running races before she becomes ill, the story follows the onset of her illness to her hospitalization, where she announces her mission to make 1000 paper cranes to pass the time. Includes illustrated instructions for making an origami paper crane.
The Bobbin Girl. An illustrated story about a young girl who becomes a bobbin girl in a cotton mill to help support her family during the industrial age. The girls join together in a protest against the poor working conditions and wages.
War Horse. Told from a horse’s perspective, this story takes us to the Western Front during World War I.
Tensions in the Gulf, 1978-1991 (Making of the Middle East). A nonfiction read about events in the Persian Gulf region. Includes photos and images highlighting Saddam Hussein’s rule in Iraq through the conclusion of the 1991 Gulf War.
Beethoven Lives Upstairs Audio CD. A beautiful one-hour audio production told from the perspective of a young boy whose mother rents a room to the famous composer. Through a combination of narrative dialog and excerpts from Beethoven’s compositions, this audio is a great way to introduce children to Beethoven’s work and instill music appreciation in the home.
