It’s that time again! Yep, it’s time for our second annual Great Big Ole Book Giveaway!
As our family reorganized our bookshelves this summer, we decided to release a few of our books to bless another family who may wish to add some American-History related reading to their home library. These books are from our personal library and are in “good” to “like new” condition. Included in this giveaway are the following:
She’s Gonna Blow by Julie Ann Barnhill. Just for Moms. A humorous, honest, and thoughtful book offering Biblical counsel and self-examination about dealing with anger as a Mom. Fantastic book that I feel led to pass on to another Mama. Paperback.
Read Alouds:
The Matchlock Gun by Walter Edmonds. 1700s America. This short read aloud takes place during the mid-1700s, when the state of New York was still a British colony. A young boy is left to protect his family when his father is called away to defend against raids by the French and Indians farther north. Included on the Tapestry of Grace and Sonlight reading lists. Paperback.
Woods Runner. American Revolution. Written by award-winning adventure writer Gary Paulsen, this book follows a thirteen-year-old in a search for his parents who are taken away as prisoners by the British. Historical insets provide additional details about the people, events, and circumstances of the Revolutionary War. Paperback.
Sounder. 1800s America. Set in the deep south, this novel tells the heartwrenching story of a poor African American sharecropping family and their loyal dog. Included on the Sonlight reading list. Paperback.
The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P Figg. Civil War. A 2010 Newbery Honor Book, this comical book follows the adventure of a twelve-year-old orphan as he runs away from his uncle to find his older brother who has been sold into the Union Army. During his adventure, he runs into an assortment of interesting characters. Paperback.
Stone Fox. 1900s America. Based on a Rocky Mountain Legend, this endearing, engaging, and emotional story recounts a dogsled race between a boy who wants to save his grandfather’s farm and a legendary Native American who has never lost a race. Included on the Sonlight reading list. Hardcover.
So Far From the Bamboo Grove. World War II. Although on booklists for Biblioplan and Tapestry of Grace, this riveting autobiographical account related to World War II and communism was too tragic and graphic for our children. (I kept thinking I could just list pages to skip, but the death and tragedy is woven throughout the book.) However, for older children, it’s an action-packed look into a lesser known aspect of World War II as it follows a Japanese family’s escape from Korea at the end of the war. Paperback.
Picture Books:
Pocahontas (First Biographies). Colonial America. A picture book biography of Pocahontas, Powhatan Indian who befriended the English settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, and helped to maintain peace between her tribe and the colonists. Hardcover.
Take the Lead, George Washington. Pre-Revolutionary America. This biographical picture book recounts the early life of George Washington up through his first job as a surveyor. Paperback.
The Liberty Bell (American Symbols and their Meanings). Recounts the history of the Liberty Bell and its importance as an American symbol. Hardcover.
Dandelions by Eve Bunting. Westward Expansion. This beautifully illustrated picture book follows a family’s journey west to Nebraska Territory during the 1800s. As they settle in a new sodhouse on the prairie, the father and his daughters attempt to brighten the mother’s inward struggles with seeing the beauty of this new life on the frontier. Paperback.
…If you Grew Up with Abraham Lincoln. Pre-Civil War. In question & answer format, this book gives a picture of what it was like to grow up during the 1800s on the frontiers of Kentucky and Indiana, in the prairie town of New Salem, Illinois, and in the city of Springfield, Illinois. Paperback.
The Railroad Book by E Boyd Smith. America in early 1900s. Two children learn about trains when the railroad opens close to their home. (Dust jacket is missing.) Harcover.
The Attack on Pearl Harbor (Graphic Library). World War II. Written in graphic-novel format, this comic book tells the story of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Paperback.
Let’s Read About… Ruby Bridges (Scholastic First Biographies). Civil Rights Movement. Recounting her personal experience, Ruby Bridges (along with co-author Grace Maccarone) shares the story of school desegregation in the 1960s in this leveled reader. Paperback.
Alphabet of Music. From Allegro to Zither, children learn about the world of music through rhymes, facts, and illustrations. Includes a tear-out poster featuring every musical term covered in the book. (Sing-along audio CD is missing from our copy.) Paperback.
Reference:
The American Art Book. Organized in alphabetical order, this mini reference book provides a single-page artist/artwork overview of 500 of America’s most influential artists from colonial times to the year 1999. Because it includes pop-culture and nudity, my recommendation would be to remove and laminate the mini-sized pages that you would like to study (such as John Singleton Copley or Grant Wood) and probably discard the rest. Paperback.
U.S. History Bites. Written for young children, this brief introductory guide to U.S. History encompasses thirty important events ranging from the Age of Exploration to the New Millennium. Each summary is followed by vocabulary and review questions. Paperback.
U.S. Presidential History Bites. Written in the same format as U.S. History Bites, U.S. Presidential History Bites provides a brief summary (written primarily as a list of facts) along with related images for each President from Washington through Trump. Each summary is followed by vocabulary and review questions. Paperback.
What’s Science All About. A practical guide to biology, chemistry, and physics, this reference book offers an engaging approach to learning key science facts through a conversational style paired with humorous illustrations. Included on the Sonlight reading list. Flexibinding.
