For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2:14
What a joy it has been venturing through an integrated study of world history, world geography, and world missions with other homeschooling families over the past few years! Our Mission: Great Commission studies have been enriching, convicting, and thought-provoking for our family, and it has been such a gift to hear the impact this series has had on other families and co-ops using this program.
For the summer, we wanted to embark on a special six-week study to highlight an area of the world that is often overlooked – Australasia and Oceania. So that families could use the many of the same books from our other programs, we’ve incorporated the geography, history, and hymn/art books from our Mission: World Wonders and Mission: Faith Forgers curriculum, adding in just a couple of read-alouds and some middle school options to provide a deeper study for older students if desired.
- For those who have used our other programs, we aimed for this to be a simple study using many of the books you already own.
- For those who are considering our Mission: Great Commission curriculum series, this is an excellent opportunity to try out the layout of the program at a smaller scale and then continue using many of the core books in greater depth if you wish to continue with other volumes of our Mission: Great Commission curriculum.
We hope you’ll join us as we head down under with…
Mission: Pacific Peacemakers – A Study of Australasia & Oceania
Mission: Pacific Peacemakers is a six-week study of the history, land, and cultures of the South Pacific featuring true accounts of the gospel spreading to the “ends of the earth.” As we study the ongoing fulfillment of the Great Commission through the love and sacrifice of Christian men and women who answered God’s call to the Pacific peoples, select readings from The Story of the World will guide us through a concise, chronological history of the early aborigines and Pacific Islanders from the Middle Ages through the 19th Century.
Note: John Williams and Florence Young served as missionaries to cultures that practiced human sacrifice and cannibalism. Content warnings are provided in the lessons plans for parents to adjust readings for young or sensitive students, but if you would prefer to altogether avoid these subjects, you may want to drop the reading of John Williams: Messenger of Peace, who died at the hands of a cannibalistic tribe.
Select readings from the geography resources provide an overview of the culture, lands, and mission efforts in Australasia and Oceania.
While select science readings will take your family through a brief study of ecology and earth science as it relates to the geography or read alouds, corresponding hymns and art projects will provide memorable connections to the peoples of the South Pacific.
Our overall aim is to provide a one-room schoolhouse approach to learning. With that in mind, we offer options each week for extending the core Mission: Pacific Peacemakers plan to provide more challenging independent study extensions for history (via additional independent reading) and geography for 7th and 8th grade students and/or advanced upper elementary students, if desired.
Over the course of this unit, middle school (and upper elementary) students will learn to draw the continents and major islands of the world freehand. (If students prefer to focus on drawing only Oceania rather than the world, ArtK12 also offers another map-drawing book, Draw Oceania.)
What holds it all together? The Mission: Pacific Peacemakers Teacher’s Guide! This open-and-go lesson plan is an integrated, six-week course of study for science, history, geography, and fine arts.
The plan is scheduled using a 4-day week to accommodate families who participate in a homeschool community/co-op day or to provide an extra day each week to shift activities or catch up if needed. Along with this study, users will also gain access to an exclusive password-protected website that provides additional resources that correlate with this study. Nine of the fourteen books in this study are also used in our larger full-year studies, Mission: World Wonders and Mission: Faith Forgers. These resources were chosen as long-term tools that will be useful for middle school coursework in research and world geography memorization.
